Thinking of the staggering 44 million lives lost to AIDS today, and giving thanks for all the people around the world who have spent their lives fighting to end it. Game-changing new HIV prevention will make this goal much easier. Let’s not make it more difficult by losing focus after decades of incredible public health interventions that have saved millions of lives. For all the derangement across this planet, this is something we know how to do, because we have been doing it. Governments left and right, north and south, responding to HIV+ campaigners, doctors, nurses, activists, corporates. PEPFAR was created, the Global Fund was created, and deaths have dropped by 70%. New interventions can now get it to zero. A song we wrote, One, was inspired by the artwork of the AIDS activist David Wojnarowicz… I occasionally hear people singing “we have to carry each other” when the lyric is “we get to carry each other.” We get to do this. If we choose to. Thankful for every ONE activist and (RED) warrior in this fight, especially the (RED)sters at @apple, @bankofamerica, @fiat, @salesforce, @vespa.. and so many more. Last night at Cain’s Ballroom in Tulsa, Bono and Edge were honoured to accept the 2025 Woody Guthrie Prize on behalf of U2. Presented by Woody’s granddaughter Anna Canoni and Woody Guthrie Center Director Cady Shaw, the evening honored a shared tradition of protest and purpose: “They stand firmly in the belief that popular music is also a force for justice and truth.” After a six-song set, Bono and Edge joined T Bone Burnett for a conversation on art and activism. “You can’t write a song to order,” Bono said, before sharing new lyrics from a work in progress, written after the July 2025 murder of Awdah Hathaleen, the Palestinian activist and consultant on the Oscar-winning documentary “No Other Land” directed by Israeli Yuval Abraham and Palestinian Basel Adra. Adra had described the killing of his friend in South Hebron Hills by an out of control Israeli settler as an attempt to erase his people off the face of the earth “one life at a time”. Bono said he called Edge, because Adra’s phrase, ONE LIFE AT A TIME, was haunting him… “the phrase can work both ways... you can break or make the world one life at a time”. Edge had some music that perfectly fitted and so this ‘haunting’ started to form into a song… “we didn’t have much choice about this… that’s how songs work.” One father shot Three children crying If there is no law Is there no crime? If there is no hope, What’s there to rhyme? History is written One life at a time One life at a time Look around Who stole Abraham who stole his words? Stole the colours from the flowers Stole the song from the birds? Who stole Mohammad locked him in a cage? From Live Aid to Kill Aid. U2 were excited to play a small part in this gigantic moment forty years ago. We spotted a fair few white flags in the crowd (a theme from the War album still gathering pace on Unforgettable Fire) and sensed LIVE AID was a coming of age for our audience as much as our band. A day when everyone seemed to agree that where you live should not decide whether you live. In the next years, many of us would come to understand that if the first step in fighting the depravity of starvation was charity, then the hard yards and the long road would be fighting extreme poverty as injustice…we would learn to ask more demanding questions of how in a world of plentiful resources and intelligence so many sentient souls could perish for the dumbest of reasons… Bob Geldof and the spirit in Wembley Stadium and RFK that day sent our band (and our fans) to places and possibilities we would never have known to move from “agonising to organising” and exploring innovative platforms like Jubilee 2000, DATA @one @red. Same spirit giving us instructions today louder than ever. As it says in the good book: have a mullet, will travel. Make Poverty History.

It’s a curious thing, who survives the music industry and who doesn’t. Bono credits his faith in the divine in everything—his faith in Jesus Christ—for what has pulled him through. His community as well. “There is a very lonely place you can find yourself onstage if you’re not friends with the people you are closest to in that moment,” says Bono of his @U2-mates. “I have my friends in the band.” He also has his wife of forty-two years: “I have a partner who is just wisdom.” And one very good lesson from Chrissie Hynde. “I remember her saying, ‘Hey, let’s not die stupid,’ ” he says. “ ‘Not in a swimming pool, choking on your own vomit. Edge and I sent the above reading and piano piece to President Zelenskyy (who we met before he was President) in the days after Russia invaded Ukraine.     The poem is by Taras Shevchenko - the great 19th century poet - who defined ‘Ukrainian-ness’ for so many.    All who believe in freedom and sense the jeopardy we Europeans now find ourselves in are not sleeping easily on this, the third anniversary of the invasion.    More to say about this and other bewilderments later. - Bono    ——
