The @dirtgirlscollective — founded by Sarah McDaniel, 29, Jaskrit Bhalla, 26, and Kieanna Jolaei, 34 — works with local farms to make composting accessible, but they also cultivate a community of independent composters. Not much happens in Balaclava, a pleasant-enough suburb of Melbourne, Australia. But every generation or so, the region births a punk band that shakes the firmament. In the mid '70s, it was Nick Cave and the Birthday Party. In 2016, it was Amy Taylor's turn. Back then, a gang of friends lived together in a modest apartment, opposite a police station and down the street from a nightclub that never closed. At any given time, you could have found Taylor, the group's then 20-year-old fateful leader, "fucking around" with friends, going out and hitting the beach in nearby St. Kilda. They all liked punk music and, less enthralled by legends and more by the scene that surrounded them, figured: "Why don't we make it ourselves?" So in one single sitting, Taylor — alongside her then flatmates Bryce Wilson, Declan Mehrtens and Calum Newton — recorded Giddy Up, a thrashing EP, and posted it on SoundCloud under their decided stage name. Despite being a full-time model, Hunny seems to have her hands in everything — from Muay Thai to ceramics to studying adaptogens. Whatever she’s doing, background jazz augments it. “I’ve been really into Stan Getz lately; he’s all I’ve been listening to,” says the 22-year-old. Alexandria’s home is filled with books, many leather-bound, each a memento of the place where it was purchased. “Inside each first page, I write the state or country where I found it,” she says. Growing up in the Philippines and later Hawaii, Gayeanne originally intended to visit Los Angeles for two months surrounding Coachella. Now, six years later, she calls the city home. As she travels the world — she and her family are reuniting in the Philippines this fall — she always looks forward to coming back to the West Coast. There, Gayeanne has a weekly Sunday gathering, hitting the farmers market to prepare salmon poke bowls, grilled steaks or mango salad for her close friends. Playmate Pride 🏳️‍⚧️🇵🇭 “My transition happened in waves; it was political, social, cultural, physical and spiritual. When I was 15, I started joining the trans pageants, which are a huge part of our culture in the Philippines. I became a prominent trans beauty queen in my country, but legally I wasn’t recognized as a woman. When I moved to the U.S. to start modeling, it was the other way around. I was legally recognized as a woman, but culturally I had to retreat into the closet. When I turned 30, I was coming to terms with the next phase of my life, and I decided that I had had enough. I was tired of living with shame and internalized transphobia. I wanted to find the biggest platform I could and tell the whole world my story. So I gave a TED Talk and opened up about my experience.
